Who We Are

QA FinTax is a firm of accountants and tax advisors working from an office on West George Street in Glasgow city centre. We look after the accounts and tax affairs of limited company directors, sole traders, contractors and property landlords — the owner-managed end of the market, where the person we advise is usually the person who carries the risk.

The practice was built around a straightforward complaint people kept making about their previous accountant: they only heard from them once a year, the bill was never the number they expected, and nobody explained what the figures meant. So we work to a fixed fee agreed in advance, keep your records current through the year on cloud software, and raise things while you can still do something about them.

Being based in Scotland matters more than it sounds. Scotland sets its own income tax rates and bands, and they are not the same as the rest of the UK — a detail that routinely trips up advisers working from English figures. We apply the Scottish rates as a matter of course for clients who are Scottish taxpayers.

Our Mission

To make accounting and tax straightforward for the people who own the business — clear advice in plain English, a fixed fee agreed in advance, and no deadline you find out about too late.

That is the whole of it. Most people do not want an accountant — they want to stop worrying about tax and get on with running the business. Everything we do is pointed at that outcome.

Our Business Values

Six commitments you can hold us to. They are written as things we will or will not do, because a value you cannot be measured against is just decoration.

Plain English, always

If we cannot explain a piece of tax advice in a sentence you would repeat to a business partner, we have not finished explaining it. You will not get a letter full of section references and no recommendation.

Proactive, not reactive

We track your thresholds and deadlines through the year — VAT registration, the higher-rate band, the dividend allowance — and raise them while you can still act, rather than reporting them after year end when nothing can be changed.

A fee agreed before we start

You get a fixed monthly or annual fee quoted up front. No hourly billing, no charge for picking up the phone, and no invoice at year end that you did not see coming.

You deal with a qualified accountant

The person who reviews your accounts is the person who answers your email. Work is not passed down to an unqualified junior or outsourced offshore without your knowledge.

Your data stays yours

We are registered with the ICO (ZB695102) and handle your records under UK GDPR. Documents move through secure cloud portals, not as email attachments, and we never sell or share your data.

We will tell you no

There is a line between tax planning and tax avoidance, and we stay on the right side of it. If a scheme you have been offered will not survive an HMRC enquiry, we will say so — even when that is not what you were hoping to hear.

Why Choose QA FinTax?

Every accountant says they are trusted and professional. Here are the specific, checkable reasons instead.

A regulated firm, on the public record

Licensed and regulated by the Institute of Financial Accountants, supervised for anti-money-laundering, registered at Companies House under SC782494 and with the ICO under ZB695102. Every one of those is independently checkable — you do not have to take our word for any of it.

A real Glasgow office, and remote when you prefer

We are on West George Street in the city centre, so you can sit across a desk from the person doing your accounts. Most clients run entirely by video and secure portal, and clients outside Glasgow are served the same way UK-wide.

Fixed fees, quoted before any work starts

A monthly or annual figure agreed up front, covering the work you actually need. Questions during the year are included, because an accountant you avoid calling is an accountant who cannot help you.

Specialist knowledge, not general practice

We publish detailed guidance on the areas we work in every day — Section 24, CIS, R&D relief, Making Tax Digital, Scottish income tax bands — and keep it current with each Finance Act rather than letting it go stale.

Scottish tax handled correctly

Scotland sets its own income tax rates and bands, which differ from the rest of the UK and catch out advisers who work to English figures. We apply the Scottish rates as a matter of routine for clients who are Scottish taxpayers.

Cloud-first, so nothing is a mystery

Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent with automated receipt capture, so your position is current when you look at it. You keep full access and ownership of your data — if you ever leave, it leaves with you.

Who We Work With

We deliberately do not try to be all things to everyone. These are the situations we handle every week.

We also work by sector — see our specialist accounting by industry pages, or browse all services and fixed-fee packages.

How We Work

From first call to filed accounts, this is exactly what happens — including the part most people dread, which is leaving their current accountant.

  1. 1

    A free first conversation

A 20–30 minute call, in the office or by video, to understand your setup: what you run, how you are paid, where the current pain is. You leave with a fixed quote. There is no obligation and we do not chase you afterwards.

  2. 2

    We handle the handover

If you already have an accountant, we write to them for professional clearance and collect your records. You do not have to have an awkward conversation or chase paperwork — switching is mostly our admin, not yours.

  3. 3

    Set-up and a monthly rhythm

We get your bookkeeping onto Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, connect receipt capture, and agree what lands when. From then on, records are kept current through the year instead of reconstructed in a panic each January.

  4. 4

Year end, then the planning conversation

We prepare and file your accounts and returns ahead of the deadline. Then we have the more valuable conversation: what the numbers say, and what to change before the next year end while there is still time to act.

The firm also holds professional indemnity insurance and is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office under ZB695102.
No. In the UK, "Chartered Accountant" is a restricted title reserved for members of bodies such as ICAEW, ICAS and Chartered Accountants Ireland, and ACCA members use "Chartered Certified Accountant". QA FinTax is regulated by the Institute of Financial Accountants instead. IFA members are qualified, supervised for anti-money-laundering purposes, and able to prepare and file accounts and tax returns for companies, sole traders and landlords.
QA FinTax is based at Suite 2/3, 2nd Floor, 48 West George Street, Glasgow, G2 1BP — in Glasgow city centre, a short walk from Queen Street station and George Square. In-person meetings are available by arrangement.
No. Glasgow and the surrounding area is where the office is and where many clients are based, but the firm works with clients across the UK using cloud accounting, video calls and a secure document portal. Being outside Glasgow makes no difference to the service or the fee.
A qualified accountant, and the same one each time. Your work is not passed to an unqualified junior or outsourced overseas, and you can contact your accountant directly rather than going through a general enquiries line.
Switching is straightforward and mostly handled for you. After a free initial consultation, QA FinTax writes to your existing accountant for professional clearance and requests your records. You do not need to have a difficult conversation with them or gather the paperwork yourself. You can change accountants at any point in the year, though just after a year end is usually the tidiest.
Fees are fixed and agreed before any work begins, charged monthly or annually rather than by the hour, so questions during the year do not generate extra invoices. Packages start from £49 per month for sole traders. The exact figure depends on your structure, turnover and whether you need VAT or payroll.
QA FinTax works with Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent, with Dext or Hubdoc for receipt capture. All are compatible with Making Tax Digital. Clients keep full ownership of and access to their own data.
