The Tax Challenges Drivers Face

  • Declaring all income — Uber, Bolt, taxi apps, account work and cash fares
  • Choosing the mileage method or actual vehicle costs (whichever saves more)
  • Claiming licence, plate, radio and app fees correctly
  • Keeping records that satisfy HMRC
  • Making Tax Digital arriving for higher-earning drivers

Mileage Method or Actual Costs?

This is the biggest decision for a driver, and it can be worth hundreds of pounds. You can either claim a flat rate per business mile, or claim the actual running costs of the vehicle. We work out which gives you the bigger deduction — you cannot chop and change once you have chosen for a vehicle.

The two ways to claim vehicle costs
MethodWhat you claim
Simplified mileage45p per business mile for the first 10,000 miles, then 25p per mile
Actual costsFuel, insurance, servicing, repairs, MOT, plus capital allowances on the vehicle
High-mileage drivers often do better on actual costs; lower-mileage drivers on the flat rate. We compare both for you.

What Can Taxi & Private Hire Drivers Claim?

  • Taxi, private hire and PCO/plate licence fees

  • Phone and data costs used for work
  • Accountancy fees

Do Drivers Need to Worry About Making Tax Digital?

Some will. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to sole traders — including drivers — with qualifying income over £50,000 from April 2026, falling to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. Affected drivers must keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates. We set up simple software and run it for you, so it is a non-event. See our Making Tax Digital page for the detail.
